The GMB Union have recently produced an analysis of the number of job vacancies compared to the number of unemployed people seeking that available work. The numbers do not make good reading for folk in Scotland generally (the big picture is worse than everywhere else except commuting into London) but particularly not in Argyll and Bute. Campbeltown heads the list with almost 13 people chasing each vacancy and even in Dunoon it is 6.3, just below Lochgilphead at 6.5. When you compare that to London at 4.2 or the Southwest of England where there is a job for every 1.8 available people it starts to look a little bleak. Read the full Scotland figures here.

For people looking for that perfect new job, it doesn't make good reading, especially for those who want to move into our area for its better quality of life. If there is no employment available, it looks like it  will not improve things if you move here. However, I can offer two encouraging lights in the darkness:
1) I have new neighbours downstairs who have moved in because he did get a job in the area. She is still working in Glasgow but able to commute there from Dunoon. Its not ideal, but if you are determined you can make it work.
2) Friends of mine are about to start running their own business and for people with the right drive and determination (that idea again) it can be a brilliant option. Not easy; long days, some fear and uncertainty at the start, potentially a hand to mouth existence courtesy of the bank to start with. When you make it work however, you are your own boss, in control, doing what you want to do, based where you choose.

Have you ever thought about becoming self-employed, to do what you want to do? Maybe its not possible within the industry you currently inhabit but what other skills do you have that can be put to good use? If you've never considered it, try reading 'Get Paid for Who You Are' by my friend David Wood - a great read that will inspire you to new heights. I think you can still get it for free by clicking here

Alternatively move to the Shetland Isles where apparently there are only 1.2 people for each vacancy - so long as you are not the .2 you should do okay.
