Dave MacLeod
I've been watching The Great Climb on BBC2; Dave MacLeod and Tim Emmett climbing the biggest overhang in Britain. 5 pitches of E6-E8 Lewisian Gneiss in a remote corner of the Isle of Harris that Emmett described afterwards as 'unrelenting mayhem'. Presumably the 40mph+ winds and pouring rain on the top pitch only added to the fun! Awesome live telly, with commentary and explanation for the benefit of non-climbers.

As well as the suspense of watching hard climbing in real time, its brilliant watching people achieve their goals. This is something that Dave has been aiming at for ages, a route that he has scoped out and dedicated lots of training, preparation and time to succeeding on. Now he is completing it, the joy on his face is obvious. And all this despite a little setback on Wednesday - a 3cm gash on his ankle through to the bone requiring 5 stitches - its amazing how sanguine he appeared to be on his blog on Wednesday afternoon.

But on top of the amazing sense of achievement, the other thing that is apparent is the huge team of people involved in the project. Yes, there are only 2 climbers but there are another 53 folks collectively responsible for producing the pictures for the rest of us to watch. Some of them you can see in the footage - cameramen hanging around on ropes beside the climbers and commentators in a tent at the bottom but presumably many more behind the scenes.

One of my contacts on Facebook was suggesting we take time to recognise the people who have helped and inspired us in the past and I would agree. As you look back at your achievements in the past, who was there with you. Whose help could you not have succeeded without? Are they aware of how helpful they were - have you been back to thank them?
